The books on this list were chosen based on the “escape factor”: that magical ability that good books have to transport you to another world, far removed from the stresses of day-to-day life. Which is, of course, what vacations are for.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed. When Cheryl Strayed was 26 years old, she made the rash decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail alone, despite the fact that she had virtually no hiking or camping experience. Her mother had just passed away; she had recently been divorced and found herself abusing drugs to the point of shooting heroin with a boyfriend. Upon setting out on the trail, Strayed immediately found that her hiking boots were improperly fitted; she eventually lost all of her toe nails. This gripping page turner follows Strayed through experiences from the frightening to the uplifting and everything in between.

Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman. The “girlchild” of this debut novel is Rory Dawn Hendrix, an adolescent growing up in poverty in a Reno, Nevada trailer park. Early on in the novel, her grandmother tells her “One of us has to make it out of here, and it’s gonna have to be you”. It’s a tall order, to say the least. But after taking the standardized school tests, Rory is deemed the smartest girl in the school, and suddenly the idea of “making it out” seems possible.

Accelerated: A Novel  by Bronwen Hruska. Chosen as one of Oprah Magazine’s best new books for October 2012, Accelerated tells the story of single father Sean Benning raising his 8 year old son Toby in a culture he is unfamiliar with and suspicious of: the upper class world of a private Manhattan school (paid for by his in-laws) that emphasizes achievement above all else. When the school recommends that Toby be placed on medication for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Sean questions the diagnosis, and his questioning opens up a world of secrets and lies, throwing his and Toby’s life into chaos.

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. Recommended by Oprah’s Book Club in 2001, it’s never too late to read this timeless classic. The backdrop for the book—India during “The Emergency” of 1975 to 1977—is a chaotic and exceedingly dangerous place. During this time a young widow named Dina takes in three boarders to help make ends meet: 2 tailors and a college student. Despite her initial distaste for her tenants, the four develop close but complex relationships as each struggles to survive.

Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. Dark Places is a gripping thriller with some odd characters whose actions are consistently unpredictable, culminating in an ending that’s also totally unpredictable. The novel tells the story of Libby Day, whose mother and two sisters were murdered in their home when Libby was seven years old; she was the only person in the home who was able to escape. Although her life has gone on, the event is revived when Libby is contacted by a group of people who study notorious crimes and attempt to figure out what “really” happened.

No matter what your summer vacation plans are, one thing is for sure, if you have teenagers they most likely will be required by their school to do some summer reading. But, reading doesn’t have to be a chore. Reading should be pleasurable and relaxing. The key to getting your teen to read while away from school for the summer is offering good reading material. Sixteen-year-old Londoner Gwyneth Shepherd comes from a family of time travelers. The gene was supposed to have skipped Gwen, but sneaks up on her unexpectedly in the middle of class one day and hurls her way back to the 18th century, where she meets an insufferable-turns-lovable time-traveling boy named Gideon. This book is perfect for your science fiction fan.

4. Death Cloud - by Andrew Lane

Even Sherlock Holmes was once a teenager. Based on the classic Sherlock Holmes mysteries, author Andrew Lane introduces teens to a younger version of the clever sleuth who takes on his first case in Death Cloud. Fourteen year old Holmes and his American tutor, Amyus Crowe, work together to discover if the mysterious deaths of two neighbors were caused by a vicious plague or if indeed it was…murder. A mysterious book that will especially entice your teenage sons!

5. Hunger Games Triology - by Suzanne Collins 

The trilogy consists of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.

The Hunger Games are an annual event in which one boy and one girl aged 12–18 are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle to the death. These books are sure to please even the pickiest teen.

After a chilly winter, Jennifer Byrne and Kristy Hall of The Tropical Travelers decided their families needed a little beach time. So with family and friends they headed off to sunny Mexico! 

Their 10-day vacation began as the entire group was whisked off to Beloved in Playa Mujeres by private, non-stop transfer. Beloved is a boutique family hotel consisting of 90 suites. On a lovely beach, this hotel caters to families who enjoy beautiful landscaping, an infinity pool, spacious accommodations and several dining options. Complete with kids club, this hotel works well for families with families of smaller children (kids club is for 4-12 year olds). We found the kids club to cater more towards the 4-8 year old set. 

With several restaurants to choose from and room service, we enjoyed the dining options here. Service and staff were very friendly and quite helpful. The kids were happy the options available here. The Beachfront Casitas are lovely and offer a beautiful private pool on the patio.

From here we moved on to Generations Maroma in the Mayan Riviera. Here we found another boutique property geared towards multi-generational groups. The resort offers only 25 rooms and adjoins El Dorado Maroma, which is an adults-only property. 

The accommodations at Generations Maroma are more than adequate in size. Most boast a full kitchen, living room, dining room and bedroom area. The hotel offers one pool and one restaurant. Keep this in mind, the hotel does have exchange privileges with El Dorado Maroma for adults which means that the adults can utilize the onsite kids club at Generations so they can dine and play at El Dorado Maroma. 

El Dorado Generations Maroma sits on famed Maroma Beach, named one of the top 10 beaches in the world by Travel Channel. And rightly so, it is a gorgeous stretch of sand. Service is top notch at both resorts and due to their small sizes, the attention to detail is exceptional and very personalized. Should you need some popcorn for the kids for movie night, no problem. Would you like to order something not on the menu, the chef is more than happy to accommodate any dietary needs you may have.

During our stay at Generations, we did have the opportunity to try a number of different restaurant options at El Dorado Maroma. We had a most delicious and surprising dinner of surf and turf at Papitos, enjoyed a Caribbean buffet at the pool one evening while listening to a steel drum band, a lovely tapas meal at Sabores and private party in our suite catered by Mio Cuccina, which featured Italian specialties.

By far one of the most outstanding meals we’ve ever had (this was agreed on unanimously by the group) was had at Le Chique restaurant. This restaurant is featured at Azul Sensatori, a family property by Karisma Resorts. This restaurant far exceeded any culinary expectations we had. Watch for our next blog post which will describe our culinary experience in detail.

During our stay at Generations we also decided to partake in a spa treatment at the El Dorado Maroma Spa. Truly one of the best treatments I’ve ever had. A combination deep tissue and relaxation massage, it was just what the doctor ordered. 

After many conversations about which excursion to choose with children in mind (5 and 6 year olds), we finally settled on Xel-ha. The kids are water babies through and through, so this seemed like the optimal choice for them. And a great choice it was.  A natural waterpark offering snorkeling, tubing, swimming with dolphins and manatees, dining options, hiking, cliff diving, zip lining, rope swings and more, this will be a full day to enjoy and explore. The kids loved swimming and snorkeling, as well as having an afternoon siesta in a hammock. Definitely a must do for adults and kids.

Our 10 day Mexican Spring Break extravaganza was a success. The kids are already planning next years’ getaway. Hawaii? Turks and Caicos? St. Lucia? The Tropical Travelers are sure to head off towards the next great beach destinations.
