The Practical Traveler: Why It Makes Sense to Purchase Travel Insurance

“Would you like to add travel insurance to your purchase?” Anyone who has ever booked a trip has more than likely been asked this question. And you perhaps weighed your options.

Just what could go wrong, you might ask? Consider a few instances encountered by vacationers:

  • A honeymooning couple makes it through their dream wedding without any major hiccups. Then, on the way to the airport, their getaway car is involved in an accident. No one is seriously injured fortunately this time, but an overnight stay at the hospital is called for, along with some recuperation time. Postponing a honeymoon is much better than missing one that is already paid for in full.
  • Two married people have saved for years, dreaming of  their much-longed-for Caribbean cruise. After fruitless telephone calls and nights of nail-biting, they discover that their cruise line has gone bankrupt. Yes, there are other cruise lines, but only the belly-up one has their money.
  • A college graduate sets out for Europe, finally getting to see sights she has dreamed about and studied in depth. Right before she gets to the Louvre, her passport is stolen, along with most of her funds and her credit card. Without proper identification, credit and funds to get home, how can she even think of continuing her grand tour?
  • A lucky middle-aged couple finally arrives in South America, but their luggage never quite makes it. Inside were most of their clothing and medical supplies necessary for a month-long vacation. How do they replace their luggage, their clothing and the vital emergency  prescriptions needed now even more than before.
  • A family has planned their trip, booked flights and paid for many of the accommodations in a major city. Just before they were scheduled to arrive, a terrorist group made threats involving this city that cause family members to want to cancel the trip. How do they do this without having to lose their money?
  • Mother Nature has sent a gift of her own to the locale a group of traveling students intends to visit. The gift? Hurricane Wilhelmina, and another one is building in the Gulf.

It is true that most of these incidents will not happen to the average traveler headed to the average destination on any one given date. It is also true that there are hundreds of individual scenarios that might play out instead.

Any one of these incidents could have had a better outcome had the people involved purchased travel insurance with the right kinds of insurance to cover their losses.

So, as you can see things can and do go wrong, and it is always better to be safe than sorry.
